👉 Natural sound art: Andrew Skeoch and his impact on acoustic ecology
🎬 Andrew Skeoch, educator, naturalist, and one of Australia’s foremost nature sound recordists, has spent over three decades capturing soundscapes from ecosystems across the globe. Through his label Listening Earth, he has published over 100 recordings documenting habitats from multiple continents, amassing tens of thousands of weekly streams on platforms like Spotify.
🔥 His work has been featured in immersive installations such as Australian Geographic’s “Our Country” and films like Rabbit Proof Fence and Disney’s The Jungle Book. Additionally, his recordings are part of cultural exhibits in institutions such as Sydney Wildlife World, bringing natural sound experiences to global audiences.
🛠 Skeoch is also an accomplished public speaker. His presentations, ranging from TEDx talks to community events, uniquely weave immersive recordings and visual analysis, inspiring audiences about the significance of acoustic ecology. As president of the Australian Wildlife Sound Recording Group, he fosters the growth of a new generation of sound enthusiasts.
📅 His international career, paired with his dedication to documenting the sounds of the natural world, positions him as a vital figure in the intersection of sound art, ecology, and cultural preservation.
🖖🏽 Programe Notes
«The microphones and the recorder create a document of what you’re hearing, they’re not what you actually heard at that time.»
—| ANDREW SKEOCH
Meeting Andrew Skeoch is truly a delightful surprise. It was through the recommendation of Las Escuchas made by Hildegard Westerkamp during an interview we conducted some time ago, which can be listened to here.
At that moment, after the recommendation, we began searching for Andrew’s material and, along with it, information about his work, tracing his contact, and assessing the possibility of arranging the interview.
Planning a year like 2024 at El RUIDO was no easy feat. We’ve seen how projects like this tend to degrade as time progresses, contexts shift or resurface, or simply, they are abandoned.
Discovering the breadth of this artist’s work was a very pleasant surprise. Not only because it’s incredibly wonderful, but also due to the warm response we received to our invitation email to chat.
Furthermore, we gained access to his recently published book, which allowed us to delve even deeper into personal and team interests during the conversation.
In the interview, we explored his equipment setup; he shared information and reflections on his professional practice and enthusiastically invited us to continue discussing topics “nobody asks about,” while showing a deep and genuine interest in our trajectory in the field.
The folkloric phrase “until the candles burn out” perfectly describes this occasion. With a 13-hour time difference between us, while Andrew enjoyed breakfast chatting with El RUIDO, we were saying goodbye three hours after sundown.
🐚 Thank you, ANDREW!
💻 About our PROCESS
The processes for this episode were both simple and complex. On one hand, we had to work with almost 90 minutes of raw audio that needed editing since the interview with Andrew in March 2024.
This time, we didn’t have much time to complete the work, so as the interview progresses, you’ll notice elements that make it feel more “raw” in its “grammatical” approach.
When it came to editing, we began from a previous montage, and the outcome of that randomness led to a rearrangement of the questions and answers. Not everything follows a linear temporal order, yet it still makes sense.
For the soundscape, we used a 180-minute recording by the artist, whose details can be found in this entry. It remained untouched, without any processing; what you hear is precisely Andrew’s skill at capturing sounds.
Of course, editing was done in Ocenaudio, and the assembly and mastering for platforms were completed in Ableton Live 11, on Windows 10, using a computer that may need a break, but like a true warrior, never gives up.
🖤 Thank you for listening. We hope you enjoy it.
📣 Thus, we release a new NOISE of the 2024 cycle.
