Shaun Robert has been collaborating with El RUIDO es el Mensaje for over 10 years, sharing his pieces with the project. It was Mariana Soto, a collaborator at the time, who initially reached out and invited him to submit his works for broadcasting. Over the years, Shaun developed such a deep connection that he never stopped sending his creations. We also had the chance to engage in various sound collaborations and exchanges.

In this interview, he shares insights into his creative process, an incredible blend of analog processes and digital manipulation.

He also speaks about the effort it takes to maintain one of the longest and most successful collective collections of concrete music on Bandcamp.

We still owe him a big hug we couldn’t give him when we toured the Midlands, but that moment will come.

For the past couple of years, this project has deepened its exploration of anthropological interviews as a tool to share often overlooked aspects of art. Many technical terms have morphed into futile decorations in otherwise superficial texts that add little to the dialogue.

At El RUIDO es el Mensaje, we are aware of this issue. We strive to be consistent with our view of art as a craft and a profession—something that sustains daily life, projects into the future, and, like any other job, should be financially viable for those who choose it. As we often say here, “it is the work that chooses the person, not the other way around.”

A pivotal moment in our relationship with Shaun Robert taught us that sound work begins with listening, continues with selection and processing, and ends with the final product, which then initiates a new cycle. It mirrors the lifecycle of a butterfly: larva, metamorphosis, butterfly, and ultimately nourishment for other creatures, repeating the cycle.

Each sound piece finds its audience based on its unique nature, and we could continue debating this topic endlessly. In this episode, we’ve gathered many of Shaun’s works, especially those where he emphasizes a “frequency work that shouldn’t be altered for better acceptance of the piece”—a syntactic challenge, though semantically impossible.
