👉 Karla Schüller, Chilean experimental composer and classical piano educator
🎬 Karla Schüller is a prominent Chilean composer and educator with a strong background in classical music and a passion for sonic experimentation. She began studying piano at a young age, later refining her skills at the Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad Arcis, where she graduated with a thesis titled “The Phonetic Value of Noise,” which inspired the creation of the CoroFonético in 2010.
🔥 Her career extends beyond composition and teaching, delving into fields such as computer sound synthesis and the Suzuki Method. Schüller has collaborated on numerous projects in theater, film, and contemporary music, including her involvement in Erik Satie’s “Vexations” at the Museo de Bellas Artes and her contribution to the album “Aquí Adentro” by singer-songwriter Daniela Ropert.
🛠 Her work has been performed in Chile and Argentina, and she has contributed to experimental productions like the album “Sound Essays of Contemporary Chile” in partnership with Sónec, the Sonoteca of Experimental Music. In 2018, she released an anthology of five albums summarizing her musical evolution.
📅 Her commitment to sound art has led her to participate in festivals and exhibitions, such as Argentina’s Semana del Sonido and the visual poetry exhibition “VíaCrisis.” Karla Schüller remains an influential figure in Latin American experimental music, contributing her expertise in both creation and education..

—| KARLA SCHÜLLER
Karla is a friend of Gerardo, and through him, she reaches the table of El RUIDO to propose a series of activities and offer support for others. Thus, a bond is born, and the connection between her and us deepens.
Everything that can go wrong will go wrong, and even worse, it will collide with any planet. On the day we spoke, after many attempts to set up the interview, when we finally aligned, the inevitable happened: poor connection (being very polite with the service providers), bad weather, extreme fatigue, and unexpected interruptions. But the essential thing, beyond everything that can go wrong and does go wrong, is the goodwill and incredible willingness for all that the future may bring.
🐚 Thank you, Karla, for honoring such a sacred name.
The conversation took place during Chile’s exceptionally long independence celebration week in September of this year. A somewhat elusive and rebellious Internet connection did not dampen our spirits, reinforced by the boundless energy of Klara, Karla’s daughter, and her pet, Flor, who occasionally joined this adventure — perfectly reminiscent of those intense scenes from the Harry Potter saga, where the protagonists are compelled to go with the flow.
Following that current, we approached a diverse, varied, and rich creative process, unrestricted and always inclusive. We transitioned from instrument performance to incidental composition for theater and audiovisuals; free/noise improvisation, as part of the Náusica project —also featuring Christian Delon and Cristóbal Cornejo, who left this dimension early and unexpectedly almost a decade ago; sound poetry, leading the Coro Fonético, even covering one of her earliest group experiences, the female quartet Esperpéntica. As a closing note, we premiered one of her most recent works: the double bass piece Sentido de la lentitud, performed by Chilean musician Alejandro Sepúlveda, with an animated audiovisual counterpart by Tomás Schüller, a visual artist and Karla’s brother.
Although this family environment fostered an active and relaxed dialogue, we chose to separate the episode from this context, prioritizing our guest’s voice, ideas, and works; weaving narrative and reflection with a rich folder of audios, generously offered for the occasion. We believe the final score was generated rhizomatically, free from any external pressure and solely focused on capturing a powerful, autonomous, and yet rare process within our scenes.
As in recent episodes, Gerardo carried out the selection and editing in Audacity for Mac. After receiving the stems, the montage was done in Ableton Live, where equalization, processing, and filtering were applied to try to reconstruct the spectral image of the voice, distorted by a poor connection. Panning was done, and almost the entire arsenal provided by Live in its version 11, along with Max patches, was utilized to achieve precise emulation.
We deeply appreciate Karla’s unwavering trust, warmth, courage, and commitment to her life and work, exemplifying faithful intuition and precise action in art, strong independence, and a unique path in life.
In memory of Cristóbal Cornejo (1983-2015)
