👉 An Acoustic Journey Through the Atacama Borderlands

⏩ Five auditory landscapes exploring life, history, and nature in Arica, Chile’s desert frontier.

🎬 “Desierto Sonoro” is an artistic exploration of Arica, a Chilean city in the Atacama Desert bordering Peru and Bolivia. The project presents five acoustic pieces that offer a sensory journey through this unique borderland. “San Martín de la costa” provides an auditory walk through the city’s diverse soundscape. “Agrovoces” captures the voice of the local community. “Internacional” explores the landscape as both container and content. “FCALP” recreates a ghostly space, while “Santuario” serves as an environmental statement about a unique nature reserve. Originally conceived as an acoustic cartography of border life, the project evolved into a more artistic, social, and symbolic representation of the region.

“Desierto Sonoro” invites listeners to immerse themselves in these layered audible landscapes, reconstructing the elements, characters, and imagined scenarios.

The work won the Prix Paysage Sonore at the 28th Phonurgia Nova Awards in France and has been selected for various international festivals.

🖖🏽 Diego Véliz is a historian and filmmaker based in the Chile-Peru-Bolivia tri-border region. He holds a degree in History from the Universidad de Tarapacá and a Master’s in Creative Documentary from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Véliz has directed several award-winning short films, including “Cuatro Manos,” “Paula,” “Wellness,” and “Concordia,” which have been screened at over 50 film festivals worldwide. With his production company Candelabro Films, he develops various artistic and cinematographic projects in the tri-border area.

“Desierto Sonoro” marks Véliz’s debut in sound art.
